I’m totally sucked into this book I’m reading for Blues as Literature. It’s called “Jazz,” by Toni Morrison. Apparently she is legendary, and I am totally ignorant for not having heard of her before. My teacher compared her to Twain and Dickens, which may be a stretch, but she is certainly talented. I really like that stream-of-consciousness style of writing. Hers has a lyrical, almost poetic quality to it. Sometimes it bothers me when writers ramble on in run-on sentences because it seems like they’re trying too hard to be different, if that makes sense. But with her it seems natural. And living in Chicago, I can really relate to her descriptions of “the City.” She’s talking about Harlem, but the themes are so universal they could apply to most big cities.
I like that I’m reading novels again..I think this literature class will be good for me. I used to read so much when I was a kid, and then I just kind of forgot about books. I remember doing “book club” in grade school, and I would have to read so many books a month so I could earn a free dinner at Pizza Hut. So my family would go out once a month to Pizza Hut to cash in on our book club pizza coupons. Which probably made us look like we were poor or something, when we weren’t really at all. But I will be, soon enough.
